Top Maine Democrats lining up behind Dill (Aug. 17, 2012)

PORTLAND (August 17, 2012) — Two-term Democratic Gov. John E. Baldacci issued a fundraising email Thursday urging Democrats to support State Sen. Cynthia Dill, the Democratic nominee for Maine’s open U.S. Senate seat.

Baldacci is the highest-profile Maine Democrat to put his solid support behind Dill’s candidacy.

He joins former state Treasurer Dale McCormick and Maine Democratic National Committeeman State Sen. Phil Bartlett in providing Dill with backing from top Maine Democrats. U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, D-1st District, also is supporting Dill’s campaign, as has Mill to the Hill, the political action committee of U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud, D-2nd District.

Additional letters, fundraisers and endorsements from other key Democrats are “in the pipeline,” Dill said Thursday. “A long line of Maine Democrats will be speaking out for my candidacy.”

“Obviously, it means a lot to us,” Dill said of Baldacci’s email. “Governor Baldacci led this state with honor and dignity during a difficult time, and he has been steadfast and solid in his support of my candidacy. He knows how important it is that we avoid more of the same in Washington, D.C., and that we move to elect a Democratic U.S. Senator who can help President Obama take our nation forward.”

As reported Thursday in the top national political publication Politico, Baldacci wrote: “I’ve known Cynthia for many years, and she’s proven to be a strong advocate for her community, for progressive values and for expanding access to opportunity throughout Maine.

“Your support matters and can help Cynthia to tell her story,” Baldacci wrote. “I hope I can count on you to contribute now. Help elect a new Democratic voice to the United States Senate.”

Added Dill: “Much has been made of the lack of national party support for our campaign of core Democratic values: tax fairness, pay equity, middle-class job expansion and preservation of Medicare and Social Security.

“As evidenced by Gov. Baldacci’s gracious note, support for those values is alive and well in Maine and, along with similar support soon to be announced, will carry us to victory in November against the guardians of the status quo.”
