Dill touts MSEA backing, will visit groups aiding women, children (Aug. 22, 2012)

AUGUSTA (August 22, 2012) — Cynthia Dill, the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate, will join officials of one of the state’s largest labor unions in Augusta on Thursday, then tour organizations that improve the lives of women and children in Waterville.

Maine State Employees Association SEIU Local 1989, representing more than 15,000 public and private sector workers throughout Maine, announced Tuesday it supports Dill’s campaign to fill Maine’s open U.S. Senate seat: “Cynthia Dill has stood with Maine State Employees in our tough fights, and we are standing with her in this tough fight,” MSEA President Ginette Rivard announced.

Peggy Rice, of Lincolnville, chairwoman of the Retiree Steering Committee and member of MSEA’s Political Action Committee; and George Burgoyne, of Bangor, chairman of Political Action by Service Employees and Retirees, the political committee that recommends MSEA endorsements, will stand alongside Dill and dozens of state workers and retirees at MSEA headquarters, 65 State St., Augusta, to unveil the endorsement.

Dill will then spend the afternoon in Waterville. At 3 p.m., she will meet Hardy Girls Healthy Women President Megan Williams and tour the nonprofit organization dedicated to the health and well being of girls and women.  At 4 p.m., she will make a stop at Educare Central Maine, the first Educare site in New England, designed to serve hundreds of mostly low-income children “from before they are born to age 5.”

MSEA is a member-run union representing active and retired workers of Maine’s executive, judicial and legislative branches of government, Maine Public Employee Retirement System, Maine Community College System, Maine Maritime Academy, Maine Turnpike Authority, City of Lewiston, Green Valley Association, Treats Falls, York County, Alpha One, Home Care for Maine, Governor Baxter School for the Deaf, Maine Military Authority, Red Cross-Bangor and Child Development Services.
