Linnea Harrold, ’15, enjoys ‘real-life exposure to the health care system’
BAR HARBOR, Maine — Mount Desert Island Hospital and College of the Atlantic launched a unique internship program this summer that offers COA students the chance to experience the world of rural medicine firsthand. Linnea Harrold ‘15, the program’s first intern, began her 10-week experience June 16.
Harrold observes MDI Hospital physicians and nurse practitioners across a variety of specialties, and has the opportunity to discuss patient encounters on a daily basis. She meets weekly to evaluate and discuss her experience with Dr. Edward Gilmore, MD, MACP, a cardiologist and director of the program; and Betsy Corrigan, nurse educator.
“COA has a number of students interested in health care careers,” Gilmore said. “This opportunity offers them real life exposure to the health care system. It’s a good idea for two of the largest institutions in our community to collaborate.”
